Celebrate World Book Day with your A2 Spanish students!

This comprehensive 8-page resource is designed to immerse your students in literary culture while practicing reading, vocabulary, and critical thinking. It's the perfect balance between cultural knowledge and language acquisition.

THE STORY BEHIND APRIL 23RD

World Book Day isn't just "read more books." It's April 23rd for a powerful reason.

On April 23, 1616, three literary giants died: Miguel de Cervantes (Spain), William Shakespeare (England), and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (Peru). UNESCO chose this date in 1995 to honor books worldwide.

But in Spain, it's REALLY about Sant Jordi.

In Catalonia, April 23rd is La Diada de Sant Jordi. Legend says Sant Jordi killed a dragon to save a princess, and from the dragon's blood grew a rose bush. Since 1923, the tradition is: un libro y una rosa — a book and a rose.

Today, Las Ramblas in Barcelona becomes the world's biggest open-air bookstore. Over 1.5 million books and 6 million roses are sold in ONE DAY. The streets close to cars. Authors sign books at tables. It's Valentine's Day + Black Friday for readers.

5 Fun Facts for Your Classroom:

  • Barcelona sells more books on April 23rd than Amazon Spain sells in a week
  • Cervantes and Shakespeare died on the same DATE but actually 10 days apart (different calendars!)
  • The first Sant Jordi book day was created by a bookseller in 1923 to boost sales
  • Don Quixote is translated into 140 languages — more than any book except the Bible
  • In 2026, World Book Day falls on a Thursday — perfect for a reading challenge

Simplified for A2 students:

"El 23 de abril es el Día del Libro. Miguel de Cervantes murió ese día. En Barcelona es Sant Jordi. La tradición es regalar un libro y una rosa. Las calles están llenas de libros. ¿Y tú? ¿Qué libro te gusta?"
